"The Incredible Hulk"

(San Francisco, Tue, Apr 30, 2002, 9:46 PM)

They're filming "The Incredible Hulk" just a few blocks from my neighborhood. They have a bit more filmmaking equipment than I do. In fact, they have at least fifty trucks-worth more equipment than I do, and traffic is being diverted for blocks around. On Sunday, I came across the setting of one of the Hulk's escapades on nearby Battery Street. The road was closed off, and a cable-car was piled atop broken mounds of pavement in the middle of the street. There was no sign of the hulk, himself, however.

My own film-making adventures are on a much smaller scale, but they are progressing nicely. I've had two meetings this week with Jim and Scott, the two guys from my screenwriting class who I'm collaborating with. Jim came up with a tiny germ of an idea, on Monday, based on a sign in a hair salon that he saw recently, which read "Rico is Back". So we all went away to think about a story that went with the sign. And when we came together again tonight, we settled on the story I came up with. It'll make for a short with a nice mixture of humor, character, pathos and celebration. That is, if we do it well, and get decent actors. Calling all dignified, effeminate Italian-American hairdressers :)

I'm really having fun with the screenwriting class-exercises, even if not all of the scripts I come up with have great literary merit. The script I wrote for next Monday is really not a great example of writing. But I laughed out loud as I wrote it, and I can't wait to see it performed on Monday. Normally, we're not supposed to participate in the reading of our own scripts. But I'm going to ask for special dispensation, because deep in my heart, I've always really wanted to be Mr Spock.
