"Muggy Day in Brooklyn"

(Brooklyn Heights, New York, Friday, 2nd July 1999 1.23 a.m. )

Had a great first (and last, for now at least) day in New York. We both slept in (9.00 is plenty late for me!) and I, at least, felt fully refreshed and bursting with energy for a change. So we went to the gym ahd had a great workout (but $20 for a day pass, oi veh).

After the gym I introduced Paul to the joys of digital photography and it didn't come out too badly.

We took the subway over to the city for brunch in Chelsea.

It started off quite cool but soon got very muggy and I began to remember why I moved to California. But it was still fun and relaxing to amble about Chelsea and Soho, even though Paul was on a mission to buy - let's see - pillow cases, a phone and a stereo. The guys in Chelsea are as hunky and bug-eyed as ever and increasingly prone to dressing just like their counterparts in West Hollywood, in tight tank-tops.

Getting back to Brooklyn wasn't so easy though, as there was something wrong with the subway. So we ended up having to walk across the bridge in the heat and humidity.

After a recouperative nap, we went back to the city to our favorite restaurant, "Anton's", in the West Village before making the mistake of going to G, a popular Chelsea hangout for squeaky clean white men - definitely not my scene, nor Paul's who, well, tends to prefer darker complected men, preferably with dreadlocks.

We took a cab over to the East Village to a place called Starlight, which had a much more mixed crowd more to my taste. Of course, I was ignored, like I usually am in bars, and it was way too smoky, but it was a nice place that I'd consider going back to. And so to bed. Tomorrow - Toronto!
