| "Soccer Fever" |
I have plenty to tell you. The question is will my arms allow it. Over the last few weeks, the tendonitis in my arms (from too much computer work in the office) has gotten worse and worse to the point where I'm mostly only typing with my right-hand. Which is slow work.
We're finally getting one or two very warm days here in San Francisco, after a truly dismal Spring. (Can never remember whether you capitalize seasons or not). I'm steaming hot as I sit here in my soccer shorts. But it's been a pleasure, for once, to be able to drive around with my car window all the way down.
Not just the weather, but other strands have combined to give me the best week in a long time. I've not hidden the fact that I've been in a fairly major depression for most of this year. So it's been so nice to feel a touch of optimism recently. I haven't tried to analyze why; instead, I've just tried to enjoy it while it lasts.
My time is completely spoken for for the next few weeks. First, the Soccer World Cup began last weekend, and I've been taping the overnight matches and somehow squeezing them into my early morning and evening hours (though admittedly fast-forwarding through the boring parts). So far, some pleasant surprises: Senegal beating France, as I mentioned last time, the United States' amazing win against Portugal, and, last night, Ireland drawing with Germany. The only one of my teams that isn't doing well is the main one: old England. Just a dismal draw against Sweden.
Then there's the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which starts it's three week run very soon. I have a pass for the main venue, the Castro, which means that I can go to any film there for free. So I imagine I'll be playing hookey from work a lot.
Finally, of course, there's my own film-work. We have our auditions this Saturday, and have 16 women lined up for the four female roles, but only four men for the two male roles. There is so much work involved in making a movie, even a short one like ours. Scott, Jim and I are on the phone to each other several times every day. This last weekend, Jim and I got together to do some light and camera tests in my apartment (see below). All I have to say is that I hope Jim remembers to focus the camera when we shoot for real.
Even work is playing ball right now. I'm getting some of my favorite type of work - designing a prototype software application from scratch. It's great fun; figuring out how to solve the basic problem, then figuring out how to write an application to do it for you, figuring out where all the buttons should go and what the thing should look like to the user. Then building it, and seeing it do exactly what you intended for it to do. In some ways, the appeal is not dissimilar to film- making.
Anyway, my tired arms are telling me to sign off. Hope I'm in a similar good mood next time I write.
