"The Fatigue Thing Returns"

(San Francisco, Saturday, 15th January 2000, 12.01 p.m. PST )

I've been in a strange state this week - on the one hand I've been very driven, both at home and at work, to get things done. As a result, I've been coming up with new ideas constantly - again, both at work and home. Yet for the entire week, I've also been unusually tired again, which is the main reason why there has only been one journal update this week. At first, I thought it was just either jetlag from my Austin trip or lack of sleep from having to get into work early a couple of days for meetings. But as the week went on, I recognized it for the fatigue symptoms I get which can linger for days or weeks at a time. When it hits me, this fatigue thing can get me down big time. Despite my general happiness these days, the constant feeling this week of tiredness did make me a little blue at times. However, the odd thing about this bout is that I've been so driven that the fatigue hasn't influenced my activities heavily, with one exception - I took almost a week off from the gym and from running. But I don't feel too badly about that - the body needs a rest now and then - perhaps that's what my body was telling me.

Finally, on Thursday however, I felt the need to go running, no matter how tired I felt. It was a good decision. It was later than I normally run in the Winter, and the streetlights were slowly activating as I jogged through Multimedia Gulch, the warehouse neighborhood I live in which now is home to many "new media" companies. It's not a pretty neighborhood, and the new "dot-comdoes" (if I can coin a term to describe the condo buildings they're throwing up throughout my neighborhood :) don't make it any prettier. In any event, by the time I got home, after a good forty minute run, I felt energized, for once. Mind over matter, I guess.

Work is definitely coming together right now. We finished the first draft of the document we've been working on for the last few months and sent it to the client. I had my annual review during my boss's flying trip here from Kansas. And we engineered a meeting with the director of sales in our office so that we could start working together more closely on integrating the sales and consulting team. Since I'd already started to feel excited about the new technology my company has just started publicizing, for the first time since joining the company I'm starting to feel genuinely optimistic.

And I got my personal laptop back! I'm not used to getting good computer service, so it was a surprise to get it back so quickly. And they seem to have repaired it for free too! Not sure why - maybe the bill is still on its way! Ever since I bought the laptop in May, I've been worried about the damage inflicted when I dropped the thing on the sidewalk after one week. Now it's all fixed, finally.
