Lord, I hate flying! I'd called American a few days ago to get an exit-row seat and had been told that I could upgrade freely to Business Class on account of my Gold-Card frequent-flier status. So I get to the gate this morning and I'm stuck in a window-seat. Any idiot would find it blindingly obvious to look at all six foot six of me and see how impossible it would be for me to sit in a regular non-exit-row seat, but the agents are always blind to that. They're so incompetent - I can't tell you how many times I've been assured of such-and-such an exit-row seat only to board and find myself in cattle class. I suppose I'm just feeling sorry for myself. Self-pity ain't attractive is it? :) Fortunately, in this case my self-pity was premature since there was a bulkhead seat free.
But even that seat wasn't comfortable. The guy sitting next to me kept jabbing his elbows into my space - quite innocently, really, but even though I asked him not to do so, he kept it up, mindlessly I guess. And my boney butt was aching from a particularly gruelling leg work-out Cecilia had put me through the other day. So I was squirming in my seat the whole way. I won't go on about how I couldn't sleep because I couldn't recline enough to prevent my head nodding forward every time I lost consciousness.
The flight seemed to last a long time. By the time we touched down at JFK, Ronald Reagan had just been elected President while at the beginning of the flight he was still starring in Hollywood movies. I read so much of the book that I'm worried I'll be dreaming about him tonight!
I hadn't realized, but the hotel was in Times Square, or near enough to it at least so that if you look out the window all you see is flashing neon lights.
And it's pretty nice - very cherrywood. It should be, at over $300 per night. But thanks to corporate munificence, I was free to order my $17 chicken-caesar salad and bask in the free luxury of it all :)
